"Gershom and Werner Scholem: A Tale of Two German Jews"
Various portraits of the Berlin Scholem family describe it as a typical representation of the Jewish world of turn of the century Europe. The four brothers - Reinhold, Erich, Werner and Gerhard - stand for the different paths, on which bourgeois German Jews embarked on: German Nationalism, Assimilationism, Socialism/Communism and Zionism.
Analyzing and comparing the cases of Werner and Gerhard-Gershom, the presentations will show that reality was more complex than that. The way from utopia to its realization proved to be treacherous and disillusioning for both brothers, although the paths they took were so different. Albeit the uniqueness of both biographies, the discussion will also show in which ways the lives of Werner and Gershom Scholem can serve as models for the Jewish experience in the 20th century.
