Gas Adsorption

In this experiment you will learn about gas adsorption to a solid surface.

Literature

In this experiment, you will use a vacuum system. Make sure that you are familar with the physical principles of vacuume, and the working principles of the two pressure gauges and the rotary pump. This information can be found in the experimental setup of experiment number 2 - Vacuume techniques or anywhere else in the web. .

For a deeper theoretical understanding of gas adsorption phenomena, students are encouraged to read Physical Chemistry by Peter Atkins and Julio de Paula, Seventh Edition, pages 987–994 (available at the university library).

The original and groundbreaking study on multilayer adsorption is described in the classic 1938 paper by Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller, "Adsorption of Gases in Multimolecular Layers" . This article introduced the BET theory and is one of the most cited papers in all of physical chemistry — with nearly 40,000 citations, it ranks among the most influential scientific publications ever written.
