Entry requirements for Postgraduate Studies

Note:

Acceptance to the post graduate studies requires approval of the school's post graduate studies committee.The committee is under no obligation to accept all the candidates who pass the entrance conditions and/or are found suitable. Instead the committee will take into consideration the number and level of candidates according to the needs of the school.

If needed, the candidate will be required to take a supplementary program of undergraduate studies. The contents and the extent of the program will be determined by the committee of the school.

As a matter of principle, the school recommends registration to the non thesis track. Only candidates, who prove a significant ability of academic discourse and experience, will be permitted to register to the track with thesis.

 

Entry requirements for "Master of Music" (M.Mus) with our without a thesis:

  1. A Bachelor of Music degree (B.Mus)

  2. A grade average of at least 80 in the theoretical subjects and at least 90 in the principle subject (instrument, vocal, composition or conducting)

  3. Personal interview

  4. Candidates who have a B.Mus or B.A. degree from the BMSM and are applying more than a year after finishing their undergraduate studies will be required to pass an entry examination, unless decided otherwise.

  5. Candidates from other institutions will be required to pass the entry examinations and demonstrate proven achievements in their area of expertise.

Please note: M.Mus students must take an English-level placement test during their first semester of studies, and must reach a level of exemption from English by the end of their first year in order to be eligible for further studies. It is the applicant's responsibility to have a high level of English when applying for M.Mus studies.

Acceptance is pending on the approval of the school's graduate admittance committee. Where necessary, the committee might require the candidate to take a supplementary program.

 

Entry requirements for "Master of Art" (M.A.):

An undergraduate degree in Musicology with a final grade average of at least 80. Candidates with a degree in music (such as B.Mus or B.Ed in music) may also apply.

Studies of  Musicology are offered in Hebrew only. International students can study in Hebrew if they have good knowledge of the language.

Please note: M.A. students must take an English-level placement test during their first semester of studies, and must reach a level of exemption from English by the end of their first year in order to be eligible for further studies. Entry requirements for "Master of Arts" (M.A.) in Theory and Composition in conjunction with the Musicology department:

This program is designed for graduates of the school in Theory and Composition who have demonstrated high musical and intellectual abilities and are interested in specializing in the theory and composition field whilst acquiring additional knowledge in extra-musical subjects related to the research of the musical phenomena. This program is not suitable for conducting students.

Students who meet the following requirements may apply to the program:

  1. Bachelor of Music degree (B.Mus) in Composition graduates OR

  2. Bachelor of Art degree (B.A.), in a joint Composition and Musicology program graduates OR

  3. Bachelor of Art degree (B.A.) in a joint Composition and another program from within the university gradtuates OR

  4. Master of Art degree (M.Mus) graduates

  1. Bachelor of Music (B.Mus) or Bachelor of Art (B.A.) graduates

  2. A grade average of at least 80 in the theoretical subjects and at least 90 in playing or singing

  3. Candidates who have a B.Mus or B.A. degree from the BMSM and are applying more than a year after finishing their undergraduate studies will be required to pass an entry examination, unless decided otherwise

  4. Candidates from other institutions will be required to pass the entry examinations and demonstrate proven achievements in their area of expertise

  5. Bachelor of Art (B.A.) graduates are required to pass the entry examination and take a supplementary program, to be determined by the school's committee
