Tel Aviv University Ha Yexida le Mexqar
ha Tarbut Unit of Culture
Research |
The Unit is in charge of Master of Arts studies in Culture Research. Culture Research studies the options available to human beings, both as groups and individuals, for managing their lives, such as: what to eat, where to live, with whom to mate, how to raise their offspring, what to believe in, and were to invest endeavors. These options for the management of life are not inherited from nature, although biology has allowed humans to develop a variety of options better than any other animal. The capacity of humans to accumulate the options as solutions for given situations, transmit the reservoir of solutions between generations, and generate options for new situations (including the creation of these very new situations) – all these have made it possible for humans to maintain life almost everywhere over the globe, in climates entirely different, from permanent ice to desert. The variety created in culture, culture diffusion and change, the transmission of options between different groups of human beings, and the struggles between groups over the creation of different or new options are all few of the basic questions in culture research. Aspects of culture research have been developed in a large range of different disciplines, from biology to anthropology, from history to economics and psychology, from sociology to linguistics and textural analysis. Culture research within the Unit of Culture Research aspires to learn from them all and to integrate this tremendous knowledge into one multifaceted discipline. |
