Research Interests:
In addition, these channels are known to be involved in global cerebral ischemia, and thought to be involved in epilepsy and schizophrenia. Site directed mutagenesis is used to change the primary structure of recombinant NMDA channel subunits.

Specific goals include:
  • Determining how structural interactions between NMDA receptor subunits change upon binding of one or both of the co-agonists.
  • channels in localized micro-neural networks utilizing electrophysiology and calcium ratio imaging.
  • Modeling of Glutamate receptor activation, permeation and block.
  • Elucidation of the role of Glutamate ion channels outside the central nervous system.
  • These studies will not only provide us with information about the molecular determinants ith NMDA receptors which influence ligand binding and gating, but also elucidate the
  • potential role of various types of NMDA channels within different areas in the brain.
