The
Adi
Lautman Interdisciplinary Program for Outstanding Students at Tel-Aviv
University is a unique four-year program that allows an
interdisciplinary curriculum from the first year of study. The program
leads directly to a Master of Arts or a Master of Science degree. Each
year, fifteen students are accepted to the Program. The highly
competitive selection is based on applicants’ scores in the Israeli
Standardized Matriculation and Psychometric exams, a short essay, a
personal interview, and a concourse examination. Thus, the students
participating in the program have outstanding intellectual potential
and are motivated and capable of hard work and independent thinking.
Students in our program set their own curriculum of study, with the help of a mentor and the head of the program. The students are encouraged to take courses from various disciplines, often from advanced years, in order to develop research skills and an interdisciplinary approach. They are also granted access to all courses in all the faculties at Tel-Aviv University, and are urged? to participate in courses in various disciplines. The program also includes, in addition to the weekly interdisciplinary seminar, a special students’ seminar in the first two years in which they are guided in interdisciplinary research.
Students in the program get full tuition support for the entire four years of enrollment, allowing them to focus on their studies and take as many courses as they wish.
As the program is a four-year program leading directly to a Master of Arts or a Master of Science degree, students in our program do not normally obtain a Bachelor's degree (neither B.A. nor B.Sc.). Rather, they are expected to get their masters (M.A. or M.Sc.) directly from the department they enter at their third year in the program. Once enrolled in specific departments, students work toward their degree according to regular M.A. degree requirements. Typically, the scope of their education at the undergraduate level by far exceeds that of students in regular programs. Yet, the official registration of the students is with the program, and their first academic degree is the M.A./M.Sc.
