The erythematous area seen here resulted from a bee sting. There is a pale center to the bite, representing an acute necrotic response, and the surrounding skin is edematous and mildly erythematous from the acute inflammation. In a small percentage of persons, such stings may elicit an anaphylactic reaction (type 1 hypersensitivity).
