The read/write ratio.

Writing is time consuming, but the truly time consuming aspect of blogging is the reading. There may be bloggers out there (writing about "professional" topics) who are able to write without being part of a network through which they're constantly bombarded with what others are thinking on similar topics, but either they're super-people, or are simply extremely lucky. In order to write about a topic in an even semi-intelligent manner a blogger has to know the territory, and to be able to determine whether a particular topic can really benefit from his or her addition to it. Filtering out what doesn't really merit yet another person's personal take on an issue can only take place if a blogger is actually reading what's being written on a wide variety of issues.
