Waiting for it to warm up isn't an option.
I read somewhere, a few years ago already, that there's no justifiable reason
for having to wait the three or four minutes it takes for an operating system
to boot up - that they can easily be designed to be ready and operable almost
as quickly as it takes to turn on a light switch. If the computer would be ready
in the same amount of time it takes for the sound and picture to start coming
in on our television I'd consider turning it on and off whenever I truly
needed it a viable option.
I don't know how many people turn to Google when they're discussing something
and can't remember the name of a book by a particular author and want to quickly
find the answer, but to my mind that's a perfectly legitimate and logical use
for the internet, and one for which continual access is necessary. After all,
if we had to wait for the computer to warm up before sending off our query we'd
almost certainly forget what we wanted to ask. If the computer weren't up and
running, my rather frequent (and previously reported)
query to the Internet Movie Database in order to find the name of a film and whether
it's worth watching just wouldn't function properly.
Sure, the need for instant gratification may
be a childish characteristic, but what's so bad about wanting my information and
wanting it now.
