THE INSTRUMENTAL DEPARTMENT

The Wind Instruments and percussion Division

 

 A. Studies towards Master's in Music M.Mus with a thesis:

 Program duration towards an M. Mus degree is two years. Program consists of lessons, workshops and seminars in a 14-16 annual hours framework to be determined by the pedagogue committee, as well as participation in musical activities relating to the field of specialization. Orchestral instruments students are required to participate in all orchestral activities and concerts as well as chamber ensembles.

 Course of studies:

1. Individual lesson – 2 annual hours for 2 years, 1 hour per year

2. Participation in all the orchestra's rehearsals and concerts for – 12 annual hours

3. 12 annual hours from a list of optional courses, including optional classes in different departments from within the school.

4. Participation in section rehearsals during the "orchestral repertoire" as required by the orchestra's annual program

5. A full program public recital at the end of the second year of studies. The recital program must be approved by the personal teacher and head of the relevant department.

6. Submission of a thesis supervised by a senior member of the school faculty, in a subject that has been approved by the head of the school or his/her representative. The thesis supervisor is to be approved by the head of the school

 Total number of annual hours in this program - 26

 Notes:

1. Double major Graduates (B.A.) who studied for one of the majors at BMSM, will be required to take additional optional classes in the school to an excess of 8 annual hours. Please refer to the list of optional courses that are available for both undergraduate and graduate students. Students who graduated with a double major in the former musicology department are exempt from taking the supplement classes.

2. A student who wishes to study for a Master's degree in a different instrument or department from the BA will be required to take supplement classes in the new field, with the approval of the school's pedagogue committee.

 The final grade will be determined according to the following components:

  • Recitals - 60%

  • Theoretical courses - 20%

  • Thesis - 20%

 

B. Studies towards Master's in Music M.Mus without a thesis:

 Program duration towards an M. Mus degree is two years. Program consists of lessons, workshops and seminars to be determined by the pedagogue committee, as well as participation in musical activities relating to the field of specialization. Orchestral instruments students are required to participate in all orchestral activities and concerts as well as chamber ensembles.

 Course of studies:

1. Individual lesson – 2 annual hours for 2 years, 1 hour per year

2. Participation in all the orchestra's rehearsals and concerts for – 12 annual hours

3. 4 annual hours of optional classes from the faculty of arts

4. 2 annual hours of chamber music

5. 8 annual hours from the list of optional classes offered by the school. Out of which, students must take seminars and presentations to an excess of 4 annual hours.  At least one seminar or presentation must be completed in the first year of studies.

6. Students in this program are required to perform 2 final recitals instead of 1 (as in the case of the program with the thesis). In both recitals the students must perform 2 full programs including at least 3 pieces from different periods and styles. One of the recitals must include a concerto. The recitals will take place 1 month apart.

7. The student will be orally examined on the program performed in the recitals. The student must demonstrate proficiency regarding the different aspects of the pieces in terms of harmony, counterpoint, structure, style and historical background relevant for the piece, the composer and the genre. 

 Total number of annual hours in this program - 28

 Notes:

1. A student who wishes to study for a Master's degree in a different instrument or department from the BA will be required to take supplement classes in the new field, with the approval of the school's pedagogue committee.

2. Transfer from one program to another is allowed after one year provided that that student completed all the requirements of the new program.

3. The degree obtained upon completion of studies in this course is M.Mus

The final grade will be determined according to the following components:

  • Recitals - 60%

  • Theoretical courses - 20%

  • Chamber music or ensembles - 20%

 

C. Studies towards Artist Diploma

Program duration towards an Artist's Diploma is two years. Program consists of lessons, workshops and musical activities relating to the field of specialization. Students are required to participate in all the rehearsal and concerts of the school's orchestra

 Course of studies:

 1. Individual lesson – 2 annual hours for 2 years, 1 hour per year

2. Participation in all orchestral rehearsals and concerts for 12 annual hours

3. 2 annual hours of chamber music

4. 6 annual hours from a list of optional courses

5. The performance of 2 full-length recitals. The two recitals must include different programs and are to be conducted one month apart

 Total number of annual hours in this program- 22

 The final grade will be determined according to the following components:

  • Recitals - 80%

  • Theoretical courses - 20%
