Adolfo Aracil (Fito) showed excellent organisational skills and the meeting oral sessions were nicely entwined with poster sessions and allowed established scientists as well as young investigators to participate and contribute.

The young scientist awards allowed 12 young scientists to participate in this excellent meeting as follows:

Ozge Gunduz Hungarian Academy of Sciences Szeged Hungary
Fanni Toth Hungarian Academy of Sciences Szeged Hungary
Marcello Trevisani University of Ferrara Ferrara Italy
David Gazzieri University of Ferrara Ferrrara Italy
Valeria Camarda University of Ferrara Ferrara Italy
Catalina Abad Complutense University Madrid Spain
Margarita Moreno Complutense University Madrid Spain
Amelia Fernandez Instituto de Parasitologia y Biomedicina Granada Spain
Elena Gonzalez-Rey Instituto de Parasitologia y Biomedicina Granada Spain
Jessica J. Hawes UCLA Los Angeles USA
Vicent Lelievre UCLA Los Angeles USA
Victor Chaban UCLA Los Angeles USA

We are very honoured and pleased to have the sponsors of the meeting including the Organizing Committee and Springer Verlag support for these young investigators. The keynote lectures introduced animal models, new techniques and novel neuropeptides. The Manfred Zimmerman award lecture was delivered by Professor Janos Szolcsanyi (Hungary) and was very well received.

A very strong presence of the Spanish Neuropeptide community was noticed and appreciated. Professor Manfred Zimmerman presented the venue for the 15th Annual Meeting Riga, Latvia, World Trade Center, May 19-21, 2005. The venue is exciting and mixes old world with modern Europe and should offer a lively ground for scientific exchange. The time chosen should allow many to participate.

Future plans (suggestions): A total of 4 suggestions for ENC meetings after 2005 were discussed during and outside the ENC Business Meeting in Alicante:

  • San Marino, a small republic within northern Italy known for its many touristy attractions, repeatedly offered by the Ferrara group (Girolamo Calo, Marcello Trevisiani)
  • UK anywhere, suggested to or by John Quinn as the potential organizer. Leslie Iversen and Anthony (Tony) Turner may help.
  • Marburg, Germany, offered for 2007 by Eberhard Weihe, i.e. 10 years after the ENC 1997 held in Marburg
  • Hungary, suggested to or offered by Janos Szolcsanyi.
  • Israel and the possibility of another joint ENC-American Summer Neuropeptide meeting was suggested by Illana Gozes (Israel).

New club members are encouraged to join, please write with your complete mailing address and three key words of your scientific interest to oritk@diesenhaus.com subject: registration to the European Neuropeptide Club (membership is free of charge).

The report of the ENC 2004 meeting in Alicante is to be published soon in NEUROPEPTIDES and will include the Manfred Zimmermann award lecture by Janos Szolcsanyi "Forty years in capsaicin research for sensory pharmacology and physiology" and the meeting abstracts.

Thanks,
