The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified along with the rest of the United States Bill of Rights in 1791. The amendment allows citizens to own firearms used for legal purposes, such as self-defense and legal hunting. It is currently the most controversial amendment, as some believe it is a hazard to allow private citizens to own guns, and that gun control is necessary to protect the people. They interpret the amendment as allowing states to form militias, and believe that the amendment should be repealed. However, the Supreme Court has held that the amendment allows citizens to own guns.
