Popeye the Sailor is a fictional character notable for appearing in comic strips and animated films. He was created by Elzie Crisler Segar and first appeared in King Features' Thimble Theatre on January 17, 1929. In 1933, Max and Dave Fleischer's Fleischer Studios turned the cartoon strip into the Popeye animated shorts published by Paramount Pictures.

The character Olive Oyl was Popeye's love interest with an ongoing competition with Bluto. J Wellington Wimpy was also a regular with his catchphrase "I would gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today". Popeye's nephews are also regulars on the show.

Popeye goes through problems trying to win Olive Oyl from Bluto, and in most episodes, Popeye fights Bluto for Olive. He gains strength through spinach.
