Octet rule

The octet rule is a useful (but simplistic) rule of thumb used in creating Lewis's dot diagrams. It states approximately that, when an atom has less than 8 valence electrons, it will attempt to gain or lose electrons to either "fill" or "empty" the outer electron shell.
