The hermeneutic turn in psychoanalysis has been influential in redirecting our thinking both about its
discourse and interpretation. In this essay I focus on Habermas' formative explication of psychoanalysis as a hermeneutical discourse, which despite its important insights, I show to harbor acute conceptual confusions. Along the way I discuss the nature of psychoanalytic and hermeneutic interpretations, arguing that both are rooted in the concept of "embodied meaning" of events, speech acts, experiences and symbols, not texts. I also show that while such interpretations disclose insightful meanings, they are bound to remain inherently illusive | |
