Oren Yiftachel
Dept. of Geography, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva
Abstract:
The lecture will trace the evolution of the concept of 'ethnocracy' and its articulation as a regime theory.
It will discuss the political-geographical point of departure, which introduces the dynamics of spatial
expansion and a key ‘spine’ along which political and social relations are formed.
The lecture will outline the development of a 'conceptual architecture', articulating key components,
such as ‘the charter group’, 'the internal frontier', 'the dark side of planning',
'segregated expansionism', 'fractured regions', 'trapped ethno-class', 'ruptured demos', and 'ethnic religion'.
It will discuss the theory vis-a-vis the prevalent descriptive,
critical and theoretical discourse on Israel/Palestine.
