When there is decreased oxygen saturation, RBC's containing Hgb SS tend to form sickle shapes that conglutinate, plugging small vessels. The result is a clinical "crisis" with severe abdominal and back pain. Seen here are pale areas of bone marrow that have become infarcted from this process.
