This radiograph of the hand demonstrates osteopenia along with an increase in bone and soft tissue size in a patient with acromegaly from a pituitary adenoma secreting growth hormone. In a child with open epiphyses of long bones, gigantism could result from excessive growth hormone production. However, in adults, acromegaly is marked more by increased soft tissue growth, giving coarse facial features and enlargement of hands and feet.
