At higher magnification, placental hydrops consists of enlargement of the chorionic villi with edema fluid, abundant stroma, and persistence into late pregnancy of a bilayered trophoblast. Unlike hydatidiform moles, there is no trophoblastic proliferation with hydrops, and vessels within the chorionic villi are present.
