Correlation 6: Medulloblastoma

The irregular posterior fossa mass that is seen here near the midline of the cerebellum and extending into the fourth ventricle above the brainstem is a medulloblastoma.

Tumors involving the brain are relatively rare. Brain tumors in adults are usually located in the cerebrum, while those in children are more often located in the cerebellum. One form of brain tumor seen in children is a medulloblastoma. This tumor often develops in the midline of the cerebellum. The expanding mass can disrupt the normal function, and patients can present with problems with movement, as well as with headache.
