The bilateral cystic hygromas in this fetus with monosomy X (Turner syndrome) are prominent. Sometimes, babies that survive are found to be "mosaics" in which part of their cells have the chromosomal abnormality and the other part do not (such as 45 X / 46 XX). This can explain survival, as well as milder phenotypic features, of the condition.
