The microscopic appearance of a basal cell carcinoma is shown here. Note the nests of dark blue cells extending into the upper dermis with pallisading of nuclei at the periphery of the nests. The neoplastic cells resemble the basal layer of the epidermis. There is some chronic inflammation beneath the neoplasm.
