What's technology got to do with it?

Placing a link in that sentence wasn't an easy decision. Web surfing is impossible without the technology of linking, and it was important to make that point. Associative library searching, for instance, may sometimes also reach the level of an art form, but because the search has to be conducted by foot, from footnote to catalog to shelf, instead of via at-your-fingertips clicking, it lacks the rhythm and flow of a good web surf. In other words, the technology is essential to the success of the surf.

So it was clear to me that the sentence demanded the word technology, but once the word was there, it would have to be clarified, and just as a good web surf is based on linking, a good sentence must sometimes be left alone. Clicking over to this clarification created a real danger of losing an important thread of thought.
