Or perhaps the breadcrumb approach?

We choose our metaphors from a vast reservoir of associations, choosing those that have meaning not only to us, but to those around us as well. In western culture Hansel and Gretle and their breadcrumb trail is well known and fairly easily identified. So using that metaphor makes sense. But for me Nakhum Gutman's Orange Peel Trail, though lesser known (though not necessarily in Israel) has richer associations. Years ago I found an opportunity to refer to it on a web page, and I'm happy to do so again. So I'll go with that one. But both metaphors, with their hint of the possibility of getting lost, and the need to find some way to avoid this, raise certain questions about the very nature of web surfing.
