It's right on the tip of my tongue.


It may be a well-known saying, but trying to figure out exactly how it's worded is still a bit of a daunting task. For some reason, each attempt on my part to make the phrase sound right just didn't succeed. So of course I looked it up on the web. But if you don't know the exact wording you're looking for, it's hard to find the phrase. (I encountered that problem an additional time while working on this column.) What I can get is a good perspective on the frequency of various wordings. According to a Google search, the "they really are out to get you" part shows up, as a phrase, about 450 times on the web. Not all of those references are paranoia-related, but I trust that enough are for me to use that wording as well.
