... the web isn't a library.

Clearly, "older" and "sadder" aren't synonyms. And yet, grown up (and not only growing old) carries with it connotations of encountering disappointment. To a certain extent we can't get "older" without getting "sadder". Should we be surprised that in Meredith Willson's The Music Man the "sadder but wiser" girl is a librarian? For many of us the web as a library was one of our earliest metaphors. Since those early days, however, we've moved away from that metaphor. The "grown up" web of today is something very different, and I have to admit to being at least a bit saddened by that. That being the case, when it comes to the internet, "older" and "library" probably don't go together. Then again, when it comes to the internet, I doubt that "older" and "wiser" go together either.
