Running in the wrong circles.

As of 2012 the monthly fashion magazine Nylon had a circulation of over 200,000. I learned that from its Wikipedia entry - which is also where I learned some basic information about it since on its web site I couldn't find an "about" page. The main page of that web site is a continually scrolling list of celebrity news/gossip. I recognized less than half the names mentioned on that page, and even for most of those all I know about them is that they're famous. Some, however, are famous for their achievements (such as they are) while others are famous for being famous. I suppose that in addition to this proving that I know very little about pop culture, it also shows that my claim of balkanization may be missing the mark. Even if each of these celebrities is known only within his or her own niche, it seems that somebody views all of these niches as a conglomerate whole of stardom. In other words, if somewhere along the line you've been granted celebrity status, that should be enough to usher you into an all-encompassing pantheon of stardom. And once you get there, even if after a while you're forgotten, you maintain a certain degree of fame - even if it's basically wasted on me.
