I can't make such a claim, though I'm not really sure that I'd want to be able to. Without a doubt these columns are written for others to read - if they weren't I wouldn't find myself rushing from the shower to grab a pencil and a slip of paper. Instead I'd simply continue to use the water as my thinking space, oblivious to the urge to write these thoughts down. But I can certainly understand why a junior academic would feel that he has more of a chance of being heard by posting his thoughts online than by staying within the confines of peer-reviewed journal articles.
