Is "classic" a function of age?

At least a handful of new books will eventually be considered classics, though in order for that to happen, somebody is going to have to read them. If they don't get read (and praised, and reviewed) the only thing they'll be doing is sitting on a shelf. They certainly won't be busy becoming classics. On the other hand, at least a few cynics will probably claim that an important part of what makes a book a classic is the fact that nobody reads it anymore.

I don't see anything shameful about someone preferring to devote time to what may become a classic, rather than to the classics themselves.
