I'll readily admit that the fact that I can touch-type, and very quickly, makes a shortcut of this sort almost superfluous. It hardly makes a difference to me whether I type the name of a site or actually type out the entire URL. I'm well aware, however, than many other people find the hunting and pecking they have to go through in order to type out a URL quite frustrating, and for them any shortcut they can use seems quite desirable.
