It's (not) only words.
Though I suppose that a good case can be made for the claim that both a blog post
and a Boidem column are, at their core, basically very similar, of late I've become
even more acutely aware of the ways in which they differ. Perhaps paradoxically,
I notice these differences when I find myself writing a blog post and say I to
myself "but that's a Boidem sort of way to write", or, as happens when
I'm preparing a Boidem column, I realize that instead of letting myself run with
an idea and examine it from numerous angles (or exhaust it's potential, or my
readers' patience, whichever comes last) I allow a bloglike "make your point
and move on" style to creep into my writing.
Four and a half years ago, in the second Boidem
column that dealt primarily with blogs, I explained why it was that I didn't maintain
a blog, why what I identified as the style of blog writing didn't appeal to me:
But I don't want to move on. I want to sink my teeth in, get the taste, get inside a thought and see where it leads me. I'll readily admit that my hypertextual musings often go far beyond getting a taste for something. Sometimes the taste of the main course gets drowned out by too many side dishes.
But since then I've of course joined the club, all the while trying to maintain
two separate but equal styles. Lately, however, I've found that doing so is becoming
more and more difficult.
Go to: Is this some sort of sign?, or
Go to: It's nothing personal.
