It just didn't seem right.

Perhaps as many as fifteen years ago I boarded a public taxi in order to get back home from Tel Aviv. Two kids in their late teens also boarded the same taxi, and I watched them as they excitedly opened a new disc they'd purchased and placed it in their discman. They then attached the earphones, and each one of them took an ear pod and placed it in his ear. They were clearly enjoying the music.

I didn't know what music these kids were listening to, but from glancing at the cover art of the CD it was clear that it was something along the lines of electronic trance. I was quite sure that the stereo separation on the disc was quite pronounced. It seemed to me that even though they were listening intently, each was hearing only half, and probably also hearing something quite distinct from the other. My curiosity got the best of me, and I asked them about this. They acknowledged that they were each hearing something different, but claimed that it didn't bother them. I decided that if it didn't bother them ....
