Out of my league.
When I try to read what I've written here as an "outsider", as, shall
we say, a reader, I find that as much as I've tried to avoid gross scientific
generalizations that only expose how much I don't know what I'm talking about
(at least on a scientific level), it's still clear that I'm winging it. What part
does memory play in the functioning of the brain? My guess may be as good as that
of my readers, but it's certainly not as good as that of brain researchers. Even
if I hedge my comments as "educated guesses", those guesses come from
reading the popular literature, and not from the bread and butter scientific research.
The excuse that we all do this is a good one, and certainly some
do it more than me, but it's still an excuse. I feel compelled to make it
clear that what I write here is conjecture, though I trust that there was never
any real danger that some high school kid was about to quote me as an expert on
brain research.
