Some of the six reasons listed for taking a laptop on vacation are quite convincing (at least one other was quite a bit less so). The article tells us that:

If you're vacationing by car with kids, your laptop and a stock of your children's favourite DVD movies is also ideal to prevent the constant "Are we there yet?" from the back seat.

Having luckily discovered that the van we rented had a DVD player, I can wholeheartedly agree. As much as I try to get the kids to look out the window and take in the view, I certainly can't complain about the extended periods of quiet that their watching a movie afforded me.
