THE RAYMOND and BEVERLY SACKLER PRIZE in the PHYSICAL SCIENCES

CHEMISTRY

Announcement of Laureates 2009

The Raymond and Beverly Sackler Prize in the Physical Sciences, awarded at Tel Aviv University, has been established through the generosity of Dr. Raymond and Mrs. Beverly Sackler. The research field for 2009 is Total Synthesis of Biologically Active Natural Products.

Tel Aviv University is proud to announce that the 2009 Raymond and Beverly Sackler Prize in the Physical Sciences for Chemistry will be awarded to:

Professor Phil S. Baran,
The Scripps Research Institute, Department of Chemistry, La Jolla, CA, USA
Web Site: http://www.scripps.edu/chem/baran/

For his seminal contribution through a series of groundbreaking syntheses that demonstrated the advantages of the novel oxidative CC bond formation in terms of efficiency, practicality, stereocontrol and "redox-economy".

Professor Matthew D. Shair,
Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA
Web Site: http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~shair/

For his seminal contribution to the syntheses of complex natural products by using new cascade reactions to rapidly achieve molecular complexity.

Professor Brian M. Stoltz,
Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering
California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA , USA
Web Site: http://stoltz.caltech.edu/

For his seminal contribution through the development of enatioselective methods for oxidation and catalytic bond construction, and their utilization for the total synthesis of complex natural products.

The Sackler Prize will be shared equally among the three distinguished recipients. The prize will be awarded to the recipients in person on May 19, 2009, during the one-day symposium honoring the distinguished laureates and the annual session of the Tel Aviv University's Board of Governors.

Tel Aviv University is honored to administer the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Prize in the Physical Sciences which is intended to encourage dedication to science, originality and excellence by awarding outstanding scientists.
