DAPHNA CARASSO

"A lovely blossom was cut down senselessly," wrote the great Israeli archaeologist Yigael Yadin of Daphna Carasso, after her untimely death in a motor accident at the age of 28.

Daphna was born in Tel Aviv in 1944. Growing up in a French-speaking family, language was to be her career. After studying in local schools, she completed her education in France, returning to Israel to fulfill her military service, on the staff of the National Defense College, then directed by Brigadier General Uzi Narkiss.

"Daphna was an intelligent young woman, with a face that expressed her love of life," General Narkiss recalls. "Her tragic death at such a young age deprived us of a woman of great potential."

After her army service, Daphna worked at Israel Radio, and then took her Master's degree at the Translator's School of the University of Geneva. On her return she joined the staff of the Speaker of the Knesset, the late Reuven Barakat. Daphna was engaged to be married, happy and full of plans, when a tragic road accident ended her life in 1972.

In 1974, the Carasso family decided to commemorate their daughter by establishing the Daphna Carasso Garden for Tropical Plants at Tel Aviv University. Today, the garden stands as a living monument, a flowering memorial to the youth, joy, and spirit of Daphna's life.
