The Daphna Carasso Garden is Israel's largest collection of tropical plants, a shelter for thousands of exotic species. Concentrated around a large central greenhouse, the Daphna Carasso Garden includes smaller satellite greenhouses and adjoining outdoor beds. The plants in this diverse collection include beautiful ornamentals, tree ferns, bromeliads, and orchids.
The Daphna Carasso Garden thus furnishes a living classroom for students of Tel Aviv University, as well as those of other universities. Elementary and high school pupils come from all over Israel for a glimpse of the tropics, as do scientists and naturalists.
In addition to its pedagogic role, the Daphna Carasso Garden is a laboratory for numerous research projects being carried out by the Botany Department. Among these is an investigation of the ecophysiology of mangroves, which is aimed at learning the secret of their ability to survive in the salty sea.
Research on the ecophysiology of water plants centers on their unique adaptation to their environment. Other projects concen the pollination of tropical plants.
