The goal of the course is to introduce basic French, and to teach the phonetic structure of the language and the noun system. Students learn basic grammar structures, including simple sentences. Students acquire basic reading skills.

Introduction to French Literature: Masterpieces in French Literature from the Middle Ages to the 18th Century

Over two semesters, the course aims to review a range of works (fiction, poetry, drama) written from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century and whose effect on Western culture is evident to this day. The development of the different genres, thematics and styles will be presented through the significant stages in French culture. The course is conducted in Hebrew and all works discussed are available in Hebrew translation.
Students will be required to read the selections and the books discussed, and a final exam will be given at the end of each semester.
The first semester presents the growth of French literature from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. The works will be analyzed while focusing on their historical, ideological and social context.

The second semester presents French literature from the 18th century to the 20th century, and relates to the implications of the Age of Enlightenment, the French Revolution, Romanticism, and the forging of modern French identity.

כשסופרים היו גם אינטלקטואלים: ספרות ופוליטיקה בצרפת במאה העשרים.
מרבית הסופרים הצרפתים במאה ה-20 ראו עצמם לא רק ככותבי סיפורת אלא גם כ"אינטלקטואלים" הנדרשים מעת לעת להתערב בזירה הציבורית במטרה להתריע על הסכנות הפוקדות את צרפת ואת העולם. תחושת היעוד שלצידה ביקורת כלפי הממסד הפוליטי הנבחר החלה עם פרשת דרייפוס עת נולד המושג "אינטלקטואל" ומאז סופרים רבים מקדמים ערכים ועמדות העומדים לעיתים בסתירה עם דעת הקהל בצרפת.
הקורס יסקור מקצת מן האירועים הבולטים שהתרחשו במאה ה-20, ביניהם שתי מלחמות העולם, הדקולוניזציה, מרד הסטודנטים והסכסוך הישראלי-ערבי ועמדות האינטלקטואלים ביחס אליהם. יבדקו גם דפוסי ההתנהגות והכלים שעמדו לרשות האינטלקטואלים, ויעשה ניסיון להעריך את הישגיהם וטעויותיהם. בין הסופרים שעל משנתם האינטלקטואלית והציבורית נלמד במשך הקורס, נציין, בין השאר, את אמיל זולה, שארל פגי, רומן רולן, אנדרה מלרו, אלבר קאמי, סארטר וסימון דה-בובואר. לבסוף תוצג השאלה: האם דגם הצרפתי של האינטלקטואל המגויס חלף ואיזה דגם יצמח במקומו בעידן האינטרנט והגלובליזציה?

When writers were also intellectuals: literature and politics in twentieth century France
Most of French authors in the twentieth century saw themselves not only as fiction writers but also as intellectuals that feel the drive to get involved in the public arena in order to raise their voice about the dangers that occurred in France and in the world. This sense of vocation that was accompanied by criticism of the elected political establishment started with Dreyfus affair during which the concept of "intellectual" was invented. Since then, many authors enhanced values and attitudes that were often contrary to French public opinion.
The course will present the intellectuals' reaction to the main events of the twentieth century, among them the two worlds wars, the decolonization, the students revolt at the end of the sixties and the Arab-Israeli conflict. It will pay attention to French intellectuals' patterns of behavior, the various means that they used and will show their success and their errors. The authors included in our study will be the following: Emile Zola, Charles Pיguy, Romain Rolland, Andrי Malraux, Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. Finally, we will try to answer the question: has the traditional French model of the "committed intellectual" passed away ? Is there a new one that emerges at the era of Internet and globalization?

The purpose of the course is to grant students' skills in the French language, to improve their written proficiency and to expand their familiarity with various types of texts – such as news articles, literature, and more. The course includes basic instruction, analysis of text structure, argument development, in order to provide students with knowledge and tools to identify the main components in a text and to express them as well. The course will stress in expanding vocabulary and proper use of the language.

The goal of the course is to teach students advanced oral expression skills in French. Classes include group discussions, and an exchange of opinions and personal proficiency. Group discussions relate to newspaper articles, a variety of literary texts and French television programs. Emphasis is on increasing vocabulary and correct language use.

This course aims to provide the student with academic writing skills in French, as a preliminary to participation in classes and seminars. Using the classic French text as a basis, the course focuses on articles in literary criticism, writing an abstract, writing a bibliography, drafting a thesis question, and writing the body of the work.

The course, given on several levels, aims to enhance students’ oral skills in French. Students work in small groups and individually. Group discussions analyze press articles, literary texts, and French television programs. Focus is on increasing vocabulary and proper usage.

השיעור יעמוד על התפתחותה של השירה בצרפת בימי הביניים :משירת האהבה הדרומית של הטרובדורים ועד לאפופאות הצפוניות (פרט לשירת רולן), נלמד על שירת אורבלה ושירת גיום. נעמוד על סוגית התרחבות קשת הז'אנרים הפיוטיים החל מהמאה ה-15. נדון בשינוי במעמדו החברתי של המשורר ועל השלכותיו על כתיבתו.
נעמוד על השפעותיה של המהפכה התרבותית של הרנסנס, על התפתחות השירה במאה ה-16 בצרפת ונכיר את נציגיה העקריים (מרו, רונסר, דו בלה, ועוד). נסקור את תמטיקת שיריהם (שירי אהבה, שירי מחאה, תרגומי תהילים לצרפתית ועוד). בתקופה זו השירה מתמסדת, המשוררים כותבים מאניפסטים ותורמים את כישרונם ליצירה בעלת גוון לאומי ברור. התגייסות זאת של השירה בשדה הפוליטי-תרבותי תבוא לידי ביטוי גם בתקופת מלחמות הדת בצרפת, פרק זה יסכם את השיעור עם שירתו של אגריפה דוביניה

The History of French Poetry (in French)

This course will be held in French and most of the accompanying theoretical articles are also in French.
The course will examine the development of poetry in France in the Middle Ages—from the love songs of the troubadours from Southern France to the epic poems of Northern France (except for the Chanson de Roland), students will examine the song of Orable and Guillaume. We will discuss the expansion of the poetic genres from the fifteenth century on and the changing social status of the poet with its various implications on the poets’ work. We will examine the influences of the cultural revolution of the Renaissance on sixteenth century poetry in France, and students will become familiar with the main poets of the period (Clיment Marot, Pierre de Ronsard, Joachim Du Bellay, and others). We will study the thematics of their poems (love poems, protest poems, translations of the Psalms into French, and others). Poetry became established in this period, and poets wrote manifests and gave of their talents to the national body of works. This recruiting of poetry in the political-cultural field is expressed during the French Wars of Religion, as is exemplified in Agrippa d’Aubignי’s masterpiece Les Tragiques.

קורס זה הוא בעל אופי תיאורטי. מטרת הקורס להקנות לתלמידים את הכלים הדרושים לניתוח מבנה המשפט. בחלקו הראשון הקורס יתמקד במבנה התחבירי של המשפט הפשוט. ידונו הנושאים הבאים : סוגי היחסים בין המרכיבים השונים במשפט, מבנה הצירופים התחביריים ,סוגי המשפט השונים : משפט בעל נושא סתמי, משפט מיקוד, או משפט בסביל. בחלקו השני יעסוק הקורס במבנה המשפט המורכב ובמכלול הפסוקיות הטפלות לסוגיהן.

Theoretical Structure of Language
This theoretical course aims to provide the student with the tools necessary for analyzing sentence structure. The first part of the course will focus on the syntactical structure of the simple sentence. The types of structural relationships between the different components in the sentence and the structure of the syntactical phrases will be discussed, as well as the different kinds of sentences. The second part of the course will discuss the complex sentence and the various subordinate clauses.

Women’s Letters from the Middle Ages Until the 17th C, From Hיloןse to Madame de Sיvignי (in French)

The course will present the issue of women’s writings under the Old Regime, from the letters of Hיloןse in the 12th century to the French court historian Christine de Pizan, end of 14th century, to the women of the Renaissance such as Queen of Navarre, Jeanne d’Albret, her daughter Marguerite de Navarre, and her granddaughter, Marguerite de Valois. We will examine the letters of Protestant princesses of Flanders at the end of the 16th century, and we will close with the letters of the Marquise de Sיvignי—one of the first women before the pre-modern era to earn a living from her writing. The Marquise de Sיvignי is also noted for creating the literary “salon”—a then new literary and social development. The course will combine the reading of French texts and articles by Joan Dejean and Donna Stanton, and will focus on French culture during the Old Regime and its attitudes toward women and their writings.

במסגרת הקורס נחקור את התפתחותן של יצירות מרכזיות בהיסטוריה של הספרות הבלגית הפרנקופונית, במאות ה-19 וה-20 מהרומן, דרך התיאטרון והקולנוע, היצור והשירה, וכלה בקומיקס.

Autobiography as a Literary and Social Phenomenon (In France)
Seminar
Why and for how long have people told their stories in the first person? Scholars of the autobiography disagree on when this genre was first employed. The seminar will combine the reading of early autobiographies (Augustine’s Confessions from the 5th century, the stories of the lives of Guibert de Nogent and Abיlard from the 12th century) and will consider the changing characteristics of the genre over time. Special attention is paid to the Italian Renaissance and the works of Jerome Cardan and Benvenuto Cellini. The course closes with the ebb of the religious confession and the rise of the secular, political genre of Memoires that is unique to French culture. Seminar participants read complete works as well as literary criticism (mostly in French) on the autobiography as a literary issue and as a social phenomenon dependant on time and place.

לאחר הצגת המסגרת התיאורטית, יבחרו התלמידים במקרה מבחן מתוך התרבות הצרפתית ותתנסו באיסוף שיטתי של מקורות ראשוניים. הם יעסקו בניתוח עצמאי של החומר במטרה להצביע על מאפייניו של העימות הפולמוסי בזירה הציבורית ועל התפקידים שהוא ממלא במשטר הדמוקרטי. בסוף הסמסטר, יצינו התלמידים את תוצאות מחקרם בפני הכיתה.

Polemical Discourse in Contemporary France (in French)

Polemical discourse will be studied as a legitimate argumentative mode fulfilling specific roles in the democratic sphere. An introduction based on a discussion of a short bibliography on argumentation and polemical discourse will be followed by a concrete analysis of specific cases borrowed from French culture, whether in literature, in the press and the media, or online. Each participant will choose a case study, analyze it individually and present her results in class (team work is also possible). Although contemporary public discourse will be privileged, analysis of earlier texts will be authorized.

Representations of the Heroine in the French Novel—A Cluster of Literatures and Languages
(Seminar, in French)
Students will analyze a variety of French novels and study the nature of the heroine in them. The assumption—that the representation of women in literature expresses historical and cultural questions related to her position in society—will be examined. The course will illustrate how literature can offer solutions while discussing social values. Required reading includes The Book of the City of Ladies by Christine de Pizan, The Heptmaron by Marguerite de Navarre, The Princess of Cleves by Madame de la Fayette, and Dangerous Liaisons by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos.
The seminar will be conducted in English, and all readings are in English.

French Adverbs : synchronic and diachronic aspects

Adverbs constitute a large category in French grammar which includes several components. The customary definitions demonstrate the problematic nature of the distinction between adverbs, prepositions, and other particles. Hence, during the seminar we will first question the existing definitions and will try to see to which extent they are problematic. We will examine the changes which occurred in the formulation and in the content of these definitions, and will attempt to distinguish different types of adverbs by their distributions and characteristic appearances. The course will discuss both synchronic and diachronic aspects of the problem. While looking into the evolution of adverbs, we will also try to find out if there is any regularity in this evolution.

לסדנה זו שתי מטרות: ליישם את הידע התיאורטי בתורת התרגום, ולבדוק מספר רב ככל האפשר של סוגיות הקשורות בהעברה מספרות צרפתית לעברית. הסטודנטים יתמודדו עם תרגום קטעים קצרים מתוך הספרות הצרפתית, בעיקר מן המאה העשרים. כל שיעור הוא התמודדות עם מטלה אחרת וקטע שונה. הם ינתחו את הקטעים, יעמדו על ייחודו של כל טקסט/סופר/ז'אנר, וינסו למצוא את האקוויוולנט הנכון בעברית. התוצאה העקיפה – חוץ מהבנת הבעיות הכרוכות בתרגום ומקניית מיומנות בתרגום – היא הנאה מקריאה שונה, אולי אף מעמיקה יותר, של טקסטים ספרותיים.

Workshop in Translating French Prose
This workshop has two goals: to apply theoretical knowledge in Translation Studies, and to practice translation, examining as many issues pertaining to transfer of French literature into Hebrew. The students will deal with short excerpts from modern French literature. Every session will involve tackling a new problem in a new context. The students will analyze the texts, study the uniqueness of each text/author/genre and try to find an equivalent in Hebrew. Apart from understanding and experiencing translation, the indirect bonus is a different, perhaps deeper, kind of reading experience

Domesticate or Foreignize?

This course will ask a question that has been troubling translators and translation research for generations: should a source text be “domesticated”, brought home to the reading public, or should it be left foreign, forcing the readers to travel and reach it, so to speak.
The students will be asked to study translations and see which way they have taken, what are the domestication methods used, how can one leave a text in its foreign-ness without impairing its readability. They will be invited to offer translations of both types.
The texts studied will be literary translations from French. If other translation students participate, other source languages will be studied as well.
The final work will be a report of one's research or a seminary paper.

הסדנה מבקשת להציג בפני הסטודנטים כמה פנינים מן העולם העשיר הזה, מתוך זווית הראייה של התנסות בתרגום דרמה. זוהי מלאכת תרגום שונה, בעיקר מפני שהטקסט אמור להיות מדובר. ואולם הדרמה של מולייר ודאי שונה מזו של סארטר, והתאטרון הצרפתי שונה מאוד מן העברי. הסטודנטים יתנסו בסוגיות הכרוכות בהבנת השוני בין המחזאים הצרפתים השונים, במציאת השפה מיוחדת והעולם הפנימי העשיר של כל אחד מהמחזאים, בהבנת הקונטקסט שבו הועלה המחזה, ובהעברת מכלול זה לעברית. הם יתבקשו לחשוב על סוגיות אלה מנקודת המבט של המתרגם, השחקן והבמאי.

Workshop in Translating French Drama
French drama is well known for its richness, its ingenuity and versatility.
The workshop will present excerpts of masterpieces from this vast repertoire, and practice their translation. Translating drama is a very different kind of experience, especially since the text is spoken. Molliere's drama, however, is different than Sartre's, and the French theater is different than its Hebrew counterpart. The students will tackle issues involving understanding the differences between various French playwrights, tracing their individual language and inner world picture, studying the context in which their plays were written and presented, and transferring these into Hebrew. They will be asked to do so from the point of view of translator, actor and director

המחקר שזכה בשם "פוסט-קולוניאלי" לא פסח גם על התרגום. תיאוריות פוסט-קולוניאליות פתחו בביטול נקודת המבט האירו-צנטרית המופרזת של מחקרי העבר, ועברו למחקר העולם השלישי. קבוצות מיעוט שונות שהצטרפו אליהן דרשו לחקור גם מנקודות מבט שלהן: תרגום פמיניסטי, או תרגום קוויר, למשל. החל מחקר של ההיברידי, בן-התערובת, ותפקידו בתרגום.

Translation in the Postcolonial Era

The era dubbed “Postcononial” had a significant effect on Translation Studies.
Postcolonial theories began by rejecting the Euro-centric attitude of past research, and moved on to study the Third World. Minority groups that joined them demanded recognition of their own point of view: Feminist translation, Queer translation. Research began to focus on the hybrid and his role in translation. These points of view will be among the issues discussed in this course, on the background of French literature and culture and its contacts with other cultures, particularly Hebrew. If other translation students participate, other source cultures may be studied as well. Students will study a certain postcolonial point of view and write a report or a seminary paper based on their research.

בשלב שני נבחן את הקשרים שנרקמים בין ג'אנרים ספרותיים לבין מאפיינים תרבותיים ואידיאולוגים. המבנה ההיררכי בו מסודרים הג'אנרים משתנה לפי התקופות ותלוי בשינויים והתפתחויות חברתיות והיסטוריות לסוגיהן. לכן הדיון על הג'אנרים הספרותיים מוביל לדיון כללי יותר על הספרות ומיקומה המשתנה בחברה.
מהעידן הקלאסי במאה ה- 17 בצרפת ועד לעידן הדיגיטאלי, הג'אנרים אינם אובייקטים סטאטיים אלא מובילים דינאמיים ומורכבים שנוצרו לשם עשייה ספרותית. היוצרים שחיים בתוך מציאות הטרוגנית שנמצאת בשינוי מתמיד משתמשים בג'אנרים באופנים שונים ולעתים בלתי צפויים ובאמצעותם מביעים עמדות ומציירים נוף מחשבתי ואפיסטמולוגי.

Literary Genres from Classicism to the Digital Age
(MA seminar, yearly, 2 hours)
The goal of this seminar in literary theory is to examine the methodological tools that allow us to organize and catalogue literary works. We will study the characteristics that identify and differentiate writing techniques and various contents. We will debate the flexibility and/or strength of the borders between tragedy, comedy, novel, satire, parody, pastoral, autobiography and autofiction.
Students will study the ties weaved between literary genres and cultural and ideological characteristics. The hierarchical structure of the genres changes in each period and depends on various developmental social and historical processes. Thus a discussion on literary genres leads to a more general discussion of literature and its changing place in society.
From the classic age in seventeenth century France to the digital age, genres are not static, but rather dynamic, complex guides, created for the sake of literature. Writers living within an ever-changing heterogeneous reality use genres in often unexpected modes, and utilize the different genres to express positions and create an intellectual, epistemological landscape.
Students will read selected excerpts from Aristotle’s Poetics, Corneille’s Theater Essays, and the introduction of Thיophile Gautier’s Mademoiselle de Maupin (Madame Maupin). Students will also read relevant contemporary critical texts, such as those by Genette, Antoine Compagnon, and Jacques Derrida.
Based on these discussions, we will examine the relevance of the term “genre” in light of the many changes that have led to a revolution in the field of “literary media.” Students will discuss the new meanings and roles attributable to these genres today.

The course will deal with major figures, trends and texts of French thought in the first half of the 20th century.
Academic philosophy during this period was both trying to save its positivist, eclectic, critical or historicizing traditions into the new century and was profoundly renewed through thinkers as Bergson or new fields such as epistemology or sociology. But it was often at the margins or even outside of philosophy as discipline or even the academy as institution that thought felt the strongest exigency to step beyond the limits of its very possibility: psychiatry found thinking to be disturbingly ‘automatistic’, Kojטve, Sartre, Levinas discovered Hegel, Husserl and Heidegger as necessary resources for renewal, and surrealism and other types of literary adventure (in Artaud or Bataille) attacked academic thought with a profound and serious anti-philosophical conviction.
The course will proceed by exemplary readings of important texts of the period; material will be provided in French as well as in English translation.

The seminar will deal with exemplary figures and texts of the “classical modernism” in European literature, i.e. roughly the period from 1890 to 1930.
The class will proceed through a series of close readings of selected texts and passages. Particular attention will be paid to the conflict of psychological and linguistic-literary categories in the analysis of the modernist text. The paradoxes inherent to the concept of modernism–to be the event in history that repeats the history of the attempt to do away with History altogether; the desire to strip away from language in the name of language–will be a central concern of the discussion.
Taught in English; texts will be provided in the original (French, English, Italian, Portuguese) as well as in English translation where necessary.

Journey to Imaginary Lands
The subject of imaginary lands where people live carefree lives has been a popular theme ever since the sixteenth century, creating a unique genre of its own. Students will examine how the subject is presented in literature and in political philosophical thought from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries.

The World of Franחois Rabelais
Lesson
Monk, priest, doctor, but above all writer—Franחois Rabelais authored at least four masterpieces that extravagantly and satirically describe the birth, education and adventures of the giants Gargantua and his son Pantagruel. In the third volume, Pantagruel and his colorful band of friends visit the greatest Renaissance experts to discuss the pros and cons of marriage. Despite the substantial arguments against the institution, the investigation continues into the fourth volume, abounding with dangers and Hebrew-named islands. The course will present the uniqueness of Rabelais’ writings as well as the literary criticism of these works, such as Mikhail Bakhtin’s work (on the esthetics of the grotesque), and more recent research by Franחois Rigolot, Michel Jeanneret, and Mireille Huchon. The course combines historical and cultural explanations of the Renaissance with attempts to interpret the text and improve students’ ability to read critical articles, for the most part in English.

France in the 20th Century (Yearly Course)

In addition to harsh wars and political events, including a period of foreign occupation, France was witness to significant social and cultural developments in this period. This lecture series will cover the major historical stations—world wars, the Algerian War, May 1968—and will also analyze the influence of prominent personalities and watershed works. The course will raise issues such as the place of religion in France, changes in national education, and innovations in cinema, theater and literature. Each lecture will be immediately followed by a relevant film, either a film from the period discussed, or a new film that reconstructs the period.

Women's voices in French literature

The course will deal with women writers from the 20th and the twenty first century. We will read and analyze a variety of works in prose (Simone de Beauvoir, Marguerite Duras, Marie Cardinal, Nathalie Sarraute, Annie Ernaux, Leila Sebbar, Marie Darieussecq, and Lydia Flem) and will try to evaluate what kind of voices their works suggest? Do they propose new strategies to defy the values of the patriarchal literature canon? Can we talk about new woman subjectivity? In order to check those issues we will read essays by women theoreticians as Judith Fetterley, Hיlטne Cixous, Luce Irigaray and more…

מטרת הקורס לתת בידי הסטודנט כלים ללימוד הסמנטיקה, ענף הבלשנות שעניינו המשמעות. הקורס יקנה ידע בסיסי הן בסוגיות שהסמנטיקה עוסקת בהן והן בקשר שבינה ובין תחומי מדע אחרים, כגון:לוגיקה, ופילוסופיה של הלשון, ותחומי בלשנות נוספים כגון: תחביר, פרגמטיקה ולקסיקולוגיה.
הקורס ידון בסוגיות הללו באמצעות מינוח עדכני, ויציג לסטודנט אסכולות ותיאוריות שונות בנושא.

Introduction to Semantics
The course aims at providing students with the tools necessary for the study of Semantics – the field of Linguistics which deals with meaning and signification. The course will introduce the foundations of Semantics and will examine its relations with other fields of research, such as Logics and Philosophy of Language, as well as different domains in Linguistics, such as syntax, pragmatics and lexicology. Recent terminology and different schools of theory will be presented. Classes will include readings and discussions based on the reading materials.

מטרת הקורס לסקור את התפתחות השפה הצרפתית החל מן המקור הלטיני וכלה בסוף המאה ה - 17. הקורס ידון בשלבים החשובים בהתפתחות השפה הצרפתית המדוברת והכתובה ויבחן את הקשר בין אירועים הסטורים מרכזיים לבין התפתחות השפה. נתמקד בשלבי הצרפתית העתיקה והתיכונה, בשינויים שחלו במבנה השפה הצרפתית בתקופות אלו ובניסוח חוקיה של השפה בידי המדקדקים של המאה ה-17. סקירת התפתחותה של הצרפתית תשמש דוגמה לתיאור מוחשי של התפתחות שפה בכלל.

The History of French
This course surveys the development of the French language from its Latin source up to the 17th century. The course will discuss the important stages in the development of spoken and written French, and will analyze the connection between central historical events and the development of the language. The course will focus on Ancient and Middle French, on the changes in the structure of the language in these periods and on the drafting of a French grammar by 17th century grammarians

עם מותו של המלך הנרי ה- 2 ובתקופת העוצרות של אלמנתו, קאטרינה דה מדיצ'י, פורצות בצרפת 8 מלחמות דת, מלחמות אזרחים אלימות והרסניות המאיימות על הממלכה. לסיכסוך מימד כלל אירופאי: הוא מערב את ספרד של פיליפ השני עם אנגליה של אליזבט ה-1. החיילים הגרמנים שכירי חרב שוטפים ובוזזים את צרפת בזמן שהאפפיור דורש ליישם את החלטות וועידת טרנטו בכנסיה הצרפתית הסוררת.
יחד עם ההרס והזוועות, מלחמות הדת הביאו לשינויים חברתיים ופוליטים עמוקים שתרמו בסופו של דבר למודרניזציה של צרפת. הפרלמנט הצרפתי התבקש לאשר את צו הפיוס שנחתם בננט והמהווה דוגמא ראשונה מסוגה באירופה לסובלנות דתית, יחסית אומנם, אך תקפה. הסמינר ישלב קריאת יצירות ספרותיות ומסמכים היסטוריים כגון עדויות ממקור ראשון של בני התקופה יחד עם קריאת מחקריהם של מיטב ההיסטוריוניים העכשוויים של תקופה זו כגון דניס קרוזה, אלי בר נביא, ארלט ז'ואנה, ז'אנין גריסון, נטלי זמון-דוויס ועוד.

The Religion Wars in France to Conciliation
With the death of the French King Henry II and in the era of the Regency of his widow Catherine de Medici, eight violent Wars of Religion broke out in France, threatening the kingdom. The conflict had a trans-European dimension—Philip the II, the Catholic king of Spain also became involved Elizabeth the I, the Protestant Queen of England. German mercenary soldiers looted and plundered France while the Pope demanded that the rebellious French church implement the decisions of the Trento Concilium. Along with the destruction and horrors, the Wars of Religion led to significant social and political changes that eventually contributed to the modernization of France. The French Parliament was asked to authorize the conciliation agreement signed in Nantes, an agreement that represented the first pact of religious tolerance—albeit partial, but none the less valid—in Europe. The seminar requires students to read literary texts and historical documents including eyewitness testimonies, as well as research by contemporary historians of the period such as Denis Crouzet, Eli Barnavi, Arlette Jouanna, Janine Garrisson, Natalie Zemon-Davis and others.

נבחן את הדיאלוג הפילוסופי ונעמוד על מאפייניו לאורך התקופות החל מהדיאלוג הסוקרטי. נעמוד על הסיבות שהפכו את הדיאלוג לג'אנר ספרותי כה פופולארי במאה ה- 18. לאחר שנסקור את פעילותו הפילוסופית והספרותית של דידרו ,נעמוד על המאפיינים המייחדים את הדיאלוגים שלו ונשפוך אור על החלוציות של דידרו והשפעתו על הדורות הבאים.
בקורס נקרא וננתח את היצירות הבאות מבחינה נראטולוגית וארגומנטטיבית: 1) שיחה בין פילוסוף לאשת המרשל דה ***, 2) זה אינו סיפור, 3) שיחת אב עם ילדיו. בהמשך, נקרא חלקים נבחרים מתוך 4) חלומו של דאלמבר ו 5) אחיינו של רמו, במטרה לשפוך אור על המרכיבים החלוציים שמאפיינים הן את כתיבת הדיאלוג אצל דידרו והן את מאפייני חשיבתו הפילוסופית הרדיקלית.

Diderot’s Dialogs
This course examines the philosophical dialog’s development in the history of literature and considers its characteristics and evolution over the ages since the Socratic dialog. We will discuss the reasons of the popularity of this genre in the eighteenth century and link it with important cultural and philosophical reasons.
A survey of the philosophical and literary activities of Diderot will be followed by an examination of the characteristics that make his dialogs unique and we will shed light on Diderot’s originality and his influence on coming generations.
Students will read and analyze the following works, in terms of their narrative and argumentative construction: Entretien d’un philosophe avec la Marיchale (“Conversation with the Marיchale”); This is not a Story; and Entretien d'un pטre avec ses enfants (A Father’s Conversation with his Children). Students will also read selected excerpts from: Le rךve de d'Alembert (D’Alembert’s Dream) and Rameau’s Nephew in an attempt to understand the originality of Diderot in the writing of his dialogs and the characteristics of radical philosophical thought in the eighteenth century before the French Revolution.

הסמינר בוחן סוגיות שקשורות לתפיסת המיניות וייצוגיה בשיח הספרותי והרפואי של המאה ה- 17 והמאה ה- 18 בצרפת. תקופה זו נחשבת למהפכנית הן בשדה המדעי והן בשדה הפילוסופי והתרבותי. תפיסת האדם וגופו, תיאוריות של רביה וילודה ותיאוריות מגדריות חדשות משפיעות באופן משמעותי על השיח הכתוב ואף מעצבות דרכי כתיבה וג'אנרים ספרותיים ייחודיים חלוצים כמו הרומן הפורנוגרפי או ספרות רפואית בלתי מקצועית כגון מדריכים לחיי מין מוצלחים.
נבחן דרך טקסטים ספרותיים ורפואיים את הפיכתה של מיניות האדם לסוגיה מרכזית שמתקשרת להיבטים מדעיים, נפשיים, תרבותיים ומגדריים באותה תקופה. נעמוד על הקשר ההדוק שנרקם בין מיניות, סקס, אהבה, פילוסופיה ותורת השיח.
נקרא וננתח רומנים פורנוגרפיים, מסות רפואיות ומאמרים ביקורתיים על מנת לבחון 1) כיצד תחומי שיח שונים מקיימים קשר דינאמי ביניהם ומשפיעים אחד על השני, 2) כיצד נעשה ניסיון להשתחרר מכבלי המוסר הדתי ולכונן תפיסה מטריאליסטית הדוניסטית של הגוף ותענוגותיו, 3) מהו מקומו המרכזי של עידן הנאורות בשינוי קיומי של תפיסת האדם את עצמו?
בה בעת, נעמוד על הדיאלקטיקה שבין תפיסות שמרניות ותפיסות מודרניות וכיצד המדע נוטה להחליף את מקומה של הדת מבלי שיבטיח שינוי משמעותי בדפוסי החשיבה השמרניים המקובלים.

Representations of Sexuality in Medical and Literary Discourses

The seminar examines issues related to the perception of sexuality and its representations in the medical and literary discourses in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in France. Revolutionary changes occurred in science, philosophy and cultural fields during this period. Medical discoveries and new theories of reproduction and procreation, new gender perceptions and different approaches to human sexuality had a strong impact on literary and medical writers. The seminar analyzes these changes and their links with new practices of writing as the pornographic novel and non-professional medical literature such as guides to a rewarding sex life.
We will study literary and medical texts in order to understand why sexuality became a central issue for scientific, psychological, cultural, and gender debates. Our aim is to investigate the strong affinities between sexuality, sex, love, philosophy and Discourse Analysis theory of discourse.
We will read and analyze pornographic novels and medical essays before the Revolution, and selected critical articles on the subject. Our aim is to answer the following questions: how different fields of discourse conduct a dynamic dialog, resulting in reciprocal influence? By which manners did these texts try to throw off the shackles of religious morality and to establish a hedonistic materialistic outlook of the body and its pleasures? What is the Enlightenment position about sexual issues?
At the same time, the seminar will examine through the texts how science tends to replace religion without promising significant changes in accepted conservative thought patterns.

הסמינר סוקר את מיקומו של וולטר בשדה הספרותי של תקופתו ובוחן את סיבות הפיכתו של וולטר לדמות נערצת מבחינה ספרותית והגותית. בשלב שני, יתקיים דיון על הדיאלקטיקה שבין שמרנות למודרניות שמאפיינת הן את חשיבתו והן את כתיבתו של וולטר.
בהמשך, נציג את המעשיות הפילוסופיות של וולטר הנחשבות היום ליצירות מופת הספרותיות שלו. ראשית נבחן את המאפיינים הספרותיים של המעשייה שנהפכה לג'אנר ספרותי אופנתי מאוד בעידן הנאורות ונעמוד על הסיבות התרבותיות והאידיאולוגיות לשגשוג זה. בשלב שני, נעמוד על הייחודיות של המעשיות אצל וולטר ועל המרכיבים החדשים והחלוציים שהפכו אותן ליצירות מופת.
במסגרת הסמינר נבחנות לעומק היצירות הבאות : צדיק, קנדיד והתם. בנוסף לניתוח דרכי הכתיבה והאפיונים הספרותיים ייבחנו הסוגיות הפילוסופיות המועלות מעצם המעשייה ומבניה.

Voltaire’s Philosophical Tales

The seminar examines Voltaire’s place in the literature of his time and analyzes the reasons this writer and philosopher is so highly regarded. The course also discusses the dialectic between conservatism and modernism that characterize Voltaire's thinking and writing. But in the same time, we will proceed to a reevaluation of the ideological positions of Voltaire in order to highlight the audacity and originality of the French philosopher.
The course introduces Voltaire’s philosophical tales, considered his finest work. Compared with the most popular fairy tales of his time, the philosophical short stories written by Voltaire are unique. Therefore, the analysis of the new literary components and characteristics is a main issue of this seminar.
Students will read and analyze Zadig, Candide, and L'Ingenu and a few other short stories. A selection of critical articles and chapters is proposed during the seminar.
