Dr. Raymond and Mrs. Beverly Sackler

Call for Nominations for the Year 2004

Dr. Raymond R. Sackler and his wife, Beverly, are international philanthropists with a deep longstanding commitment to support scientific research. Dr. Sackler, a physician and cofounder/president of a multinational pharmaceutical company, has received numerous honors and awards, including that of Doctor Philosophiae Honoris Causa, at Tel-Aviv University, Doctor of Law h.c., at Cambridge University, the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters at the University of Connecticut and membership of the Visiting Committee of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Dr. Raymond Sackler is an Honorary Knight Commander, Order of the British Empire, and a Chevalier de la Legion d' Honneur. Mrs. Beverly Sackler was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, by the University of Connecticut.

As a tribute to Raymond and Beverly Sackler's generous support of research in astrophysics and astronomy, Asteroid 7690 Sackler was named in their honor in a joint citation by the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the Leiden University Observatory in 1998.

Dr. and Mrs. Raymond Sackler have supported research in astronomy, physics, and astrophysics at many world-renowned institutions. For example, at the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge University, England, their support led to the establishment of the Deep Sky Initiative, the addition of a Lecture Theater, and the endowment of as visiting fellowship program. At the Leiden University (Netherlands), they have sponsored the continuation of the Observatory Laboratory and endowed a Visiting Astronomer/Astrophysicist program.

Other related endowments in mathematics, astronomy, and the natural sciences include visiting professorships at the University of California, Berkeley (astronomy), the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey (one in theoretical and mathematics physics and one in astronomy), Princeton University (astronomy), the Canadian Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Toronto, the University of Oslo (in mathematics, physics and chemistry), Norway, and a distinguished lecture in physics at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. There is also a Raymond and Beverly Sackler endowed fellowship at the Institu des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques, France. Distinguished Lecture endowments include Lectures in Astronomy and Physics at Harvard University, and the Emilio Segre Distinguished Lectures in Physics at the University of California, Berkeley.

In addition to their strong support of cutting edge multidisciplinary research in astronomy, physics, and mathematics, Dr. and Mrs. Sackler have been dedicated sponsors of basic biomedical research. The Raymond and Beverly Sackler Foundation in the United States has sponsored research projects, usually for a period of five years or more, at numerous academic institutions of excellence, including Cornell University Medical College, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Rockefeller University, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Yale University School of Medicine, Duke University Medical Center, Tufts University School of Medicine, New York University School of Medicine and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

At Tel-Aviv University, for almost three decades, the Sackler family's support of scientific research has been extraordinary. The Raymond and Beverly Sackler Faculty of Exact Sciences includes schools, institutes, centers and departments in physics, mathematics, chemistry, geophysics, and astronomy/planetary sciences. The Sackler Faculty of Medicine includes the Sackler School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Postgraduate Medicine, School of Communicative Disorders, the Maurice and Gabriel Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine, and the Sackler Institute of Molecular Medicine. Dr. Sackler was the moving force in the implementation of the New York State/ American Program of the Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University.
