"'Special K' is a musical and comedy revue written, produced, directed, and performed by Kellogg students (with an occasional surprise appearance from a faculty or staff member). The fun begins early in the fall with creative writing meetings and goes on tour to New York in late spring". (Northwestern, p. 22)
Well, not everything is song and dance. The extra-curricular topics discussed in this chapter are the host environment of the B. school, financial aid, and housing.
Space, architecture, big cities, small towns, corporate headquarters, sport and recreation, let's see what the different B. school offer you.
"Built on a plan by architect John Galen Howard, the campus covers over 1,200 acres. It is strikingly beautiful, with its central neoclassic buildings surrounded by picturesque creeks, secluded glens, and stands of historic redwood trees" (Berkeley, p.4)
".... San Francisco is less than half an hour from Berkeley by car or by the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system... (Berkeley, p. 27).
"The University is located 35 miles south of the city of San Francisco. Its 8,200-acre campus on the San Francisco Peninsula stretches from the plains of the Santa Clara Valley to the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, beyond which lies the Pacific Ocean. The campus has been nicknamed "The Farm" because it was here that Senator Stanford once raised champion racehorses: large parts of the campus retain a rural appearance. The University is adjacent to the city of Palo Alto". (Stanford, p. 4)
"Pittsburgh is also the fifth largest corporate headquarters city in the United States, home to many corporate enterprises, including Alcoa, Calgon Corporation, Consolidated Natural Gas Company, Dravo Corporation, Duquesne Light Company, Federated Investors, Inc., H.J. Heinz Company, Kennametal Inc., Mellon Bank Corporation, Miles Inc., PNC Financial Corp., PPG Industries, Inc., USX Corporation, and Westinghouse Electric Corporation. Eleven of the nation's Fortune 500 companies have made Pittsburgh their home base". (Carnegie, p. 46)
"GSIA students and faculty members also take advantage of the 500 acres of grass, woods and trails in Schenley Park, immediately adjacent to the school, for daily jogging, running, bicycling and walking, as well as for picnicking and cross-country skiing. In addition, Schenley Park offers a public golf course, a swimming pool, tennis courts, playgrounds and an ice skating rink." (Carnegie, p. 45)
"The University's Pittsburgh campus is located in Oakland, the educational and cultural center of the city of Pittsburgh. Although only ten minutes by bus from downtown's corporate center, the University campus is adjacent to 450-acre Schenley Park, which offers scenic vistas, woodland trails, a conservatory, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a golf course, a nature center, playgrounds, and an ice-skating rink." (Pittsburgh, p. 14)
"Nine-million-dollar Mervis Hall is the home of the Katz Graduate School of Business. Mervis opened in the fall of 1983. Its sleek appearance is representative of the best in contemporary architecture and the forward-looking Pittsburgh corporate community." (Pittsburgh, p. 13)
"The city of Chicago offers the best of both worlds - a thriving commercial and financial center and an unparalleled system of parks and recreation facilities - a perfect match for the diverse interests of our students." (Chicago, p. 12)
"The core of the University of Chicago's 175-acre campus, one of the most beautiful urban universities in the country, is a collection of elaborate neo-Gothic buildings clustered around quadrangles by such noted architects as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen and Frank Lloyd Wright. Robie House, one of Wright's most famous residential designs and a national architectural landmark, is part of the campus and houses the university's alumni offices." (Chicago, p. 27)
"Chicago is a fountain-head of creative architecture and a vibrant center of real estate and development activity. It is the nation's transportation hub, the heartland's great industrial and commercial center, and a financial services giant. Here is the nation's largest concentration of health service organizations and health industry manufacturers". (Northwestern, p. 8)
"The city is a shopper's paradise, featuring elegant boutiques on North Michigan Avenue situated alongside major department stores. A lakefront of parks, beaches, and harbors is the city's pride; its delight is good food, found in countless superb restaurants. The city's many ethnic neighborhoods also offer fine dining experiences". (Northwestern, p. 23)
"Outside the classroom, students socialize with each other at school-sponsored events or explore New York City". (Columbia, p. 11).
"The common denominator for the international business education at Columbia Business School is its location in New York City. New York City is dynamic and international. From Amsterdam Avenue to the United Nations, the city teems with the languages, foods, clothing, religions, news and political views of almost every nation. International students, who make up a quarter of the student body, are attracted to Columbia because of its program and hospitable environs. Also, Columbia regularly draws upon the multitude of global business experts who live and work in New York to teach and lecture at the School". (Columbia, p. 5)
"The city as your campus. Yes, it's big. And glamorous, and exciting - the world capital for everything from finance to fashion. .... Stern's campus, located in the heart of Greenwich Village, extends far beyond the borders of Washington Square. .... The city itself becomes your campus, offering resources too countless to name. There's no better place than New York City to learn, explore, and challenge your perceptions about yourself and the world you live in". (NYU, back cover)
"Cornell is situated in Ithaca, New York, in the Finger Lakes region of the state - an area known for its rolling hills, deep valleys, clear lakes, open countryside, and state parks. Excellent sailing, swimming, skiing (cross-country and downhill), hiking, riding (you can board horses at Cornell), and other outdoor activities lure visitors and attract permanent residents from around the world. The growing success of New York wine is in great part due to the flourishing wineries of the Finger Lakes, and vineyard tours are a fascinating way to spend the better part of a day". (Cornell, p. 19)
"The Simon School is located on the University of Rochester's River Campus, a park-like setting near the bank of the Genesee River, three miles from downtown Rochester. Public parks and a nearby golf course provide a pleasant suburban-living atmosphere for students. The campus and student-housing areas also enjoy convenient access to public transportation, expressways and the Greater Rochester International Airport". (Rochester, p. 52)
".... Hanover offers a unique combination of cultural sophistication, rural New England values, and natural beauty. .... Boston in just over two hours, New York City in just over four hours, and Montreal in about three hours.
The unrivaled natural beauty of Hanover's surrounding countryside and seasonal variation. .... Including hiking in the nearby White Mountains, canoeing on the Connecticut River, cross-country and downhill skiing, bicycling and jogging on local trails, admiring the brilliant fall foliage, or studying in the shade of a tree on a warm spring day". (Dartmouth, p. 13)
"Duke is located in Durham, North Carolina, midway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains. The city is part of the Research Triangle, which has the highest per capita population of Ph.D. scientists and engineers in the country. Durham is a city of great diversity which has maintained its Southern hospitality while welcoming new residents from all over the world. With a population of 181,000, Durham offers newcomers depth and variety in cultural, medical, educational, and entertainment activities. The mild climate adds to this pleasant environment and allooutdoor activities year-round". (Duke, p. 24)
"UNC located 20 minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport. The Triangle area is home to three major universities, the state capital and Research Triangle Park - a unique community created to foster technological research and development. This combination of business and academic institutions creates a dynamic environment for the study of management and general business practices". (North Carolina, p. 2)
"Countless green spaces, brick walkways and Greek revival architecture provide an attractive setting for Carolina. The tree-lined campus and the Chapel Hill town center are hosts to an arboretum, buildings on the National Historic Register and the renowned Morehead Planetarium. The Carolina campus was listed among the top 20 most artistically acclaimed campuses in the nation in 1991". (North Carolina, p. 4)
"The Harvard Business School campus is located on 61 beautifully landscaped acres across the Charles River from Cambridge and Harvard Square, 15 minutes from downtown Boston. A variety of convenient services are available to the HBS community, and the campus is wheelchair accessible for people with disabilities". (Harvard, p. 12)
"MIT is a middle-sized university close to the center of a large metropolitan area. Within a two-mile radius of the Institute are the Museum of Science, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Gardner Museum, the New England Conservatory of Music, the New England Aquarium, the Boston Public Library, and many sites of historical interest. Students can travel easily to the theater district, where Broadway plays are often previewed and local productions are staged. Among the numerous cultural organizations in the area are the Boston Symphony Orchestra, The Boston Pops, the Boston Ballet Company, the Opera Company of Boston, the Boston Center for the Arts, and the American Repertory Theater". (MIT, p. 64)
"If you occasionally hanker for a taste of life in a big city, you can head up the road 45 minutes to Indianapolis. In addition to the restaurants, theater, shopping, and general ambience you'd expect from a cosmopolitan area, you'll find lots of sports events, since Indy is known as the amateur sports capital of the world. (You may have known about the Indy 500, but we bet you didn't know about this accolade.) And closer to home, Indiana's campus was the site of the famous bicycle race featured in the movie Breaking Away." (Indiana, p. 24)
"One of the wonderful surprises awaiting MBA students who have never visited this part of the country is the lush natural beauty of Central Texas. The Hill Country, where Austin is located, features tall oaks, hills, lakes, and rivers. This tranquil setting complements the energy of the city itself, a major metropolis with approximately 800,000 residents.
"Austin is consistently named among the most livable cities in America. It boasts one of the cleanest environments among American cities of its size and has the highest proportion of residents with graduate degrees of any metropolitan area in the country". (Texas, p. 5)
"As a top-ranked school in a world-class city, Anderson is uniquely positioned to offer students access to real-life business experiences through its Day on the Job visits and consulting projects done for academic credit. L.A.'s rich base of company headquarters and regional offices and the corporate community's strong involvement with the school give unparalleled value to Anderson's Career Nights, brown bag lunches, and various other speakers programs. Set on the outskirts of Hollywood, the school also provides students with exceptional courses and opportunities for internships and field studies in the entertainment industry". (UCLA, p. 10)
"Los Angeles, the second largest city in the United States, is the center of one of the most economically and culturally rich areas of the world. A vibrant and exciting city in which to study and live, L.A. is home to a variety of major corporate headquarters and offices, many of which welcome the opportunity to interact with UCLA and the Anderson School.
Banking and financial services, healthcare, entertainment, energy, high-technology, retailing, and venture capital companies as well as a variety of entrepreneurial concerns are within easy access of UCLA's Anderson School. The strong association between the school and these companies provides Anderson students with continuing exposure to a diverse network of business executives". (UCLA, p. 33)
"Just as London, Zurich, Hong Kong and New York emerged as major corporate centers in the decades since World War II, Los Angles is firmly establishing itself as one of the business capitals for upcoming decades as the world prepares to enter what has been termed the "Pacific Century”. Los Angeles also serves as a major center for international trade. As the nation's primary gateway to the Pacific Rim and an increasingly important one to Latin America and Europe, the city offers a vast array of opportunities to meet with global business executives, gain internships, conduct consulting projects and develop career-building contacts". (USC, p. 47)
"Nashville is favored by its key location in the rapidly developing sunbelt region, offering unique and exciting professional, cultural and recreational opportunities. The population of the metropolitan statistical area is approximately 900,000. Half of the U.S. population is within 600 miles of Nashville". (Vanderbilt, p. 28).
"RCA, Warner Brothers, and many other record companies have offices and recording studios in Nashville, which enjoys longstanding fame as "Music City, USA". Some of the most sophisticated soundstage and television studio facilities in the United States are here." (Vanderbilt, p. 28).
"Philadelphia offers the resources and advantages of a modern city while maintaining a small-town atmosphere with neighborhoods rich in history and cultural diversity. The city offers the highest standard of living per dollar of any major city in the Northeast corridor. Its location between New York and Washington puts it close to the centers of both business and government." (Wharton, p. 25).
"The Olin School is part of a world-renowned research institution. Located on two campuses at the western edge of St. Louis, Washington University comprises the 169-acre Hilltop Campus and the 59-acre Medical Campus. Eighteen Nobel laureates have been associated with Washington University..... St. Louis is one of a handful of American cities experiencing a renaissance of its downtown area, so you'll find carefully restored structures next to soaring skyscrapers, as well as good dining, theater, music and sports - just minutes away from campus. St. Louis is also headquarters for 12 Fortune 500 corporations, and top executives interact regularly with students. The cost of living in the St. Louis area is low among major metropolitan areas". (Washington, p. 7).
"St. Louis is an intriguing city; maybe the only place in the U.S. that can legitimately lay claim to being northern, southern, eastern, and western". (Washington, p. 36).
All leading US B. schools have some kind of financial assistance programs. Exhibit 8.1 details three specific types of financial assistance the schools offer to their students: Merit, financial assistance on a merit basis; Need, financial assistance on a need basis; and Minority, special funds set aside for minority students.
"A general Institute principle governing the use of loans is that no student should be fully dependent (or nearly so) upon loans in any year". (MIT, p. 72)
"A Fellowship is a merit award based on demonstrated academic excellence, professional promise, and personal merit". (Columbia, p. 29)
"Although all students are considered for merit-based financial aid, only about 20 percent of our students are awarded scholarships". (Cornell, p. 29)
"A small number of Sloan-funded merit scholarships are awarded each year to outstanding second-year students, based on their academic performance and community involvement during the first year study. Some teaching and research assistantships are open to academically qualified students". (MIT, p. 73)
"The School honors MBA candidates with named fellowships. Top candidates who exhibit leadership, academic performance and potential for successful careers in business receive fellowships providing tuition, fees and stipends of up to $5,000 annually. Fellows are selected solely on merit". (North Carolina, p. 3)
"The Simon School assists qualified students in financing their management education. The School's financial aid program includes fellowships, assistantships, scholarships and a deferred-tuition loan program. In awarding merit-based aid, primary emphasis is given to academic excellence, professional development and demonstrated qualities of leadership". (Rochester, p. 66)
"The Graduate School of Business Administration awards fellowships and scholarships based on scholastic merit, evidence of leadership, GMAT scores and full-time work experience. Awards are granted for the fall and spring semesters only; reapplication each academic year is required. Recipients must be full-time MBA students. Awards vary from full tuition to partial tuition, with most being half-tuition fellowships". (USC, p. 53)
"The Office of Admissions and Students Services administers scholarship and fellowship awards which are open to all full-time students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Awards are based primarily on demonstration of financial need, superior academic ability, and the availability of funds". (Michigan, p. 32)
"The primary source of financial assistance is tuition fellowships, which are awarded in various dollar amounts and applied against tuition charges. These fellowships are awarded primarily on the basis of academic merit, with financial need as a secondary consideration". (Pittsburgh, p. 26)
"You might like to know that the Graduate School of Business offers more than $160,000 each year in scholarships to MBA candidates. And don't think that these funds are only for a few select students. Forty-two percent of Indiana MBA students receive financial assistance through the School of Business, and scholarships range from $500 to $5,000 a year". (Indiana, p. 45)
"Financial aid consists of both fellowships and loans. HBS fellowships are granted primarily during the second year of the Program to those students with the highest levels of financial need. Because the maximum fellowship will cover tuition only, students should also investigate all outside sources such as scholarships and grants, foundation support, corporate sponsorship, and family contributions". (Harvard, p. 19)
"Scholarships, consisting of grand aid and low-interest University loans, are available to students who show exceptional need". (Columbia, p.29)
"Darden offers no financial assistance in the form of employment. Because of the nature of their schedules, students should plan not to be employed during their time at Darden.
"Several educational loan programs are available to students needing financial assistance. .... After these loan programs have been tapped, a student may borrow from The Darden School Foundation". Virginia, p. 36)
"Vanderbilt University and the Owen School maintain a comprehensive program of scholarships and financial aid to ensure that you will be able to afford to attend Owen once you are admitted." (Vanderbilt, p. 42).
"Need-based financial aid is available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Your decision to apply for financial aid has no bearing on your candidacy to the MBA program. Sixty-five percent of Wharton's MBA students are provided with financial assistance and the School continually seeks and receives funds for student fellowships, scholarships, and financial assistance programs." (Wharton, p. 30).
"We do not offer need-based financial aid, tuition waivers, or graduate assistantships to international students, so we expect you to show us evidence that you will be able to finance your entire M.B.A. program". (Washington, p. 42).
"Over 60 percent of SOM's graduates currently receive some form of financial assistance, which is available through Yale grants, long-term loan programs and other sources. Yale School of Organization and Management grants are awarded solely on the basis of need, using data provided through the Graduate and Professional School Financial Aid Service (GAPSFAS). U.S. citizens or permanent residents applying for assistance from Yale may obtain a GAPSFAS form by writing to GAPSFAS, Box 23900, Oakland, CA 94623-0900. International students must submit a special financial-aid form that SOM mails directly to international applicants applying for financial aid". (Yale, pp. 49-50).
"The Minority Fellowship Program is a corporate-sponsored scholarship program for talented African-American, Hispanic-American and Native American students who are U.S. citizens and demonstrate academic excellence, leadership skills and financial need.... While neither the student nor the company makes a commitment for long-term employment, full-time employment arrangements often develop." (Chicago, p. 42)
"Prospective minority students are encouraged to contact the director of admissions for additional information about minority opportunities at Tuck. A number of scholarships at Tuck are available to minority students who demonstrate financial need." (Dartmouth, p. 23)
"General University Opportunity Awards. These University-sponsored scholarships are used to facilitate the enrollment of disadvantaged and minority students. The number and amount of the award varies". (Michigan, p. 35)
"Minority students accepted by the consortium and admitted to the Graduate School of Business may qualify for a consortium fellowship. These fellowships pay full tuition and required fees for a maximum of sixty graduate hours toward the MBA program, plus a $5,000 stipend for two years of full-time MBA study". (Texas, p. 40)
"A limited amount of fellowship support is available for exceptional minority applicants to the full-time MBA Program. Based on the overall strength of the application and to a lesser extent on the student's financial need, fellowships and merit-based support cover fees and in some cases outside expenses". (UCLA, p. 44)

Exhibit 8.2 details types of housing at leading B. schools: Campus, on or off-campus university housing; Married, housing for married students; and International, international house.
"Students who are married and/or have children are eligible for apartments in Family Student Housing. Rents are almost always less expensive than comparable off-campus housing (Berkeley, p. 38).
"A broad range of housing is available on the private market or through university housing. University housing includes furnished units in a campus residence hall as well as furnished and unfurnished apartments in the university neighborhood. All units are within walking distance of campus and are on or near the campus bus routes." (Chicago, pp. 44-45)
"Accommodations include single rooms in graduate student apartments, married student housing, studio apartments and one-bedroom apartments which are owned and managed by the University". (Columbia, p. 12)
"The residence halls, all located on the HBS campus, are an integral part of social and academic life. More than 50% of the first-year students and 20% of the second-years live in the dorms. Residential housing promotes group study and facilitated [sic] learning outside the classroom..... graduate student housing is also an excellent option. ....". (Harvard, p. 12),
"About 70 percent of current MBA students do, opting to living in apartments in and around Bloomington. Rents are reasonable - they range from about $400 a month for a one-bedroom apartment to a little more than $800 for a three-bedroom apartment. On the other side, campus housing offers a nine month contract, meals you don't have to cook, and easy contact with other graduate students. Single students can have single or double rooms; married students can choose from efficiencies up to three-bedroom apartments". (Indiana, p. 23)
"Ashdown House, Edgerton House, Green Hall, and Tang Hall provide comfortable living quarters and recreational facilities for 1057 single graduate students (about one-third the number enrolled at the Institute). Housing units for married students are located at the west end of the campus and in a 29-story apartment tower adjacent to the Sloan School. They contain a total of 406 apartments". (MIT, p. 65)
"The majority of married and single graduate students live in private rooms or apartments in and around Ann Arbor. All University housing, and all housing listed with the Off-Campus Housing Office, is available without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, or ancestry". (Michigan, p. 96)
"University housing is available to graduate students. Most Stern students are housed together on designated floors in Alumni Hall, a dormitory on Third Avenue. Other graduate residences include shared studio space in Washington Square Village, adjacent to the campus, and shared suites at the 26th Street Residence". (NYU, p. 48)
"Comfortable and affordable housing is available on campus and in the nearby student community of West Campus. Most graduate students live in affordable off-campus apartments. A convenient free shuttle bus system enables students to live outside the University area. The shuttle routes encompass much of the surrounding city, offering continuous service throughout the day and evening". (Texas, p. 14)
"Most students rent nearby off-campus apartments, but limited space is also available in the graduate residence hall and in UCLA married-student apartments. Rental rates off campus are relatively expensive in and around Westwood and West Los Angeles, and students should make housing arrangements early. Each summer the Anderson School publishes a "roommate book" to help newly admitted students make roommate connections. This book also provides specific information on housing in the L.A. area". (UCLA, pp. 31-32)
"University housing is available, with options ranging from on-campus residence halls and apartment buildings to a residential college in downtown Los Angeles that houses a combination of undergraduate and graduate students plus faculty members". (USC, p. 27)
"The University of Virginia provides housing for both single and married graduate students." (Virginia, p. 37)
"Most graduate and professional students live in privately owned housing in the city's residential neighborhoods, or inland and along the shore. The University has limited dormitory space available for single students as well as some apartments for married students. The University maintains listings of rooms, apartments and houses available off campus." (Yale, p. 64).
"The pleasures of affordable housing. Attractive, affordable communities are all over, many of them within two miles of Washington University. Since most apartments are close, you may find walking the most appealing form of transportation". (Washington, p. 37).
