Practicing Tones

As you all probably know by now, in Chinese there are many words with different meanings but with similar pronunciations. That is something that makes it harder to understand what you are saying if you do not say it properly. As short sentences will probably be understood, it will not work with long ones.
Correct pronunciation is not as hard as you think, and here are some tips to try and make the job easier:

1) Listen to the teachers pronunciation in class and mimic it - that is also something that we do in class. So don't be shy, speak up and repeat the words as the teacher says them.

2) Another thing you can do is say the words (at least to yourself) in the correct pronunciation every time you write them and also when you learn it for the first time from the yellow book.

3) When you have a bit of time to yourself (it can also be just 5 minutes) try and build sentences in your head and say them with the correct pronunciation - this will also help you improve your grammar (just as long as you do it according to the rules). In class we see video films in Chinese - that is also a source which you can mimic.

4)You can also rent movies in mandarin Chinese. There are very good movies in mandarin and you'll be surprised of how much you understand even at this early stage of studying.

5) You can also just repeat words in your head in their correct pronunciation.

6) In general, just try to put in a bit more time into practicing Chinese every day. Even another hour each week can make a difference. After all, Chinese is just half about writing and grammar. The other half is pronunciation - especially if your planning to use it in the future.

7) There are many things that can help you. You can ask your teacher for help and there are also additional lessons given by 3rd year students which are very helpful.

We are learning new words all the time which sound the same if you say them wrong. So just remember that a little bit more effort will make a big change. Thank you for reading.

Good luck!
