Viruses are the most diverse and most successful biological entities. The ability of viruses with limited genetic materials to overcome host defenses and utilize the host cell for their needs is remarkable. Viruses are a major cause for mortality and morbidity as viruses cause 20% of cancers cases and new emerging viral infections are recognized almost every year. One of the problems of treating viruses is the enormous genetic diversity of any given viral population that results in emergence of drug and vaccine resistant strains. In the Kobiler lab we are interested in understanding the mechanisms that generate and maintain genetically diverse viral population.
