Discussion of the Question 06/03

METEORITES

The question was:

What is the cumulative effect of all the meteorites that fell on the Earth during the last billion years on the length of a day? Did it become longer or shorter? By how much?

(10/04): A proposed solution to the problem has been submitted (22/10/04) by John G. Florakis, from the University of Athens, Greece (e-mail sniper_700@hotmail.com). You can see the solution in the PDF file. However, we feel that the proposed solution considers only one aspect of the problem,- the increase in the mass of the Earth. It completely disregards net angular momentum that can be imparted by meteorites and makes no attempt to estimate the magnitudes of various contributions.
