The present literature of theoretical physics contains examples in which an apparently legitimate mathematical procedure yields an unacceptable result. It turns out that in some cases the literature applies add hoc mathematical manipulations that aim to correct the relevant problem. A shortcoming of this practice is that it can mask an inherent theoretical inconsistency that is the actual reason of the discrepancy. The following article examines four different cases of this kind and points out erroneous elements of the presently accepted structure of theoretical physics.
