Philosophies of language deal with a vast number of issues: formal grammar, syntax, proper names, anaphora, reference and meaning, to name only a few. Many of these philosophies give almost none or little account of the dynamics in which the language changes or evolves. To a great extent, current philosophical literature treats cultures of discourse as rigid, static frameworks, with little attention given to the modes of production and modification of these frameworks. Though these philosophies do not explicate the modes of production and modification, I think that in many cases these modes are implicit in them. Different philosophies would employ different dynamical attitudes. Not every mode of production, modification and evolution of a language, or a conceptual system, fits every philosophy of language.
In my talk I will focus on Robert Brandom's Pragmatism and analyze its dynamical force. This will be done with the aid of a varied dynamical discourse, that of the Babylonian Talmud. The normative infrastructure underlying the Talmudic discourse and dynamic leads us to two very different types of philosophies: a radical Pragmatism of a Brandomian sort, and a more semantic type Pragmatism. In this way we can diagnose the gaps imbedded within Brandom's philosophy and can start reconstructing the pillars required in order to build a new philosophy of language; a philosophy that is rooted deeper in the many manifestations of tradition, interpretation and evolutionary dynamics as in the Talmudic case-
