Historians of science have often noted that the establishment of biological knowledge around 1800 was part of a general cultural-epistemological change characterised by the 'dynamization' or 'temporalization' of nature. In my paper I will suggest an alternative historiographical perspective. I will argue for the central role of rhythm and rhythmical patterns in the emergence of a new understanding of biological development.

In particular, it was the establishment of a new 'epigenetic' iconography which enabled the conceptualization of developmental processes in terms of gradual, continuous change.

In my talk I will focus on the work of two of the founders of modern embryology, namely Christian Heinrich Pander (1794-1865) and Karl Ernst von Baer (1792-1876).
