Archaeology is highly visual
and image oriented. Photographic documentation of our excavations and
the objects recovered is a crucial part of our research and publication.
It is also a daily part of our teaching. Most expeditions have a staff
photographer and for most of our projects Pavel ("Pasha") is our man in
the field. Field photography is central to the documentation of context
while back in the studio, the artifacts we discover are photographed on
film. Both field and artifact photos are then scanned and the digital
images linked into databases so that any square, room, wall or object
can be connected to its larger context both graphically and textually.
Svetlana is in charge of the scanning and digital manipulation.
