Nanoplasmonics: Classical oscillator physics at the nanoscale

Metallic nanostructures represent physically realizable classical oscillator systems at the nanoscale, due to their ability to sustain pronounced optical resonances in the form of localized surface plasmons. The lecture will cover the fundamental physics of these resonances, highlighting concepts such as bright and dark modes investigated using both optical and electron energy loss spectroscopies. Recipes for achieving control over both effective mode volume and quality factor will be elucidated, and application examples ranging from biosensing to optoelectronics provided.
