This is an extensive burn injury in a small child. The extent of a burn injury is assessed by estimating the total body surface area (TBSA) involved with the burn, as well as what % is total thickness and what % is partial thickness burn. This injury shown here involved >90% TBSA. The prognosis depends upon the TBSA, the age of the patient, underlying disease states, and presence of an inhalation injury. Skin grafting from non-burned sites is necessary if the full thickness of the skin is burned.
