Here are separate placentas, but note that the one at the upper left is small, with an 8 week embryo seen on its surface as just a small rounded tan mass. The larger placenta has a 15 week fetus. Both have undergone demise. This illustrates that twin gestation may be more common than realized, because one twin may be lost so early that it is not noticed.
